Water Conservation/Pollution Perservation |
Every year during our Earth Week Celebration, we have a tree planting day. Each student works to help plant a tree on the school grounds. We have some issues with erosion, pollution from the interstate and sound pollution near our school. So, we hope that after a few years of growth, these trees will provide the protection from the elements, that our school needs as well as give the environment the stability from erosion that it deserves.

Automatic Faucets
All of our classroom/gym and library bathroom faucets (36) have been replaced with spring loaded faucet handles. These handles do not need to be turned off. They will automatically shut off after a certain amount of time. This prevents students from accidentally leaving the water on and wasting water throughout the day.

Faucet Posters
|
32 Green School Kids Club Students created posters to place around the school for sinks that do not have spring loaded faucet handles. These sinks are in the teacher's lounge, the Nurse's office and in some classroom's too. The classroom researched how much water is wasted if one drip a minute was collected for a year in just one faucet. The outcome was very amazing! It turned out to be 34 gallons of wasted water! WOW!!! Luckily our students made these reminder posters so we don't have that problem! They also made posters to go above the water fountains to let students know to not waste water there either.

Storm Drain Stenciling
|
The storm drains on our school property have been stenciled and painted, by students with Chesapeake Bay Drainage to let people know where the water is going. It also warns people that if they pollute near this waterway, it is going into the Chesapeake Bay. Many people do not understand this, so we wanted to give them an understanding!

Pond Life Observation
This group of 27 students as well as many others every week come outside to the pond area in our courtyard to participate in outdoor lessons. Several classes have done observations of the pond and wildlife in and around the pond. It is a beautiful area that as a school we encourage students to keep clean and litter free!
Pollution/Litter Pick up
E ach year, our school works to collect litter around our school grounds a few times a year! It is amazing how much trash is collected just around our school grounds, but since we are right beside the interstate, we get a lot of trash blown off the road onto our playgrounds. So, it is important that we collect it often to keep our school beautiful and keep the trash out of our pond and storm drains!
