Gym Show/Cross Country RunWES is the only school in Washington County to still have a yearly gym school. This picture was taken in 2019 at our 47th annual gym school. The participants are 4th and 5th graders that sign up to stay after school one day a week for 2 months. Each year, there are at least 3 different sets of activities.
The next picture is the WCPS Elementary School Cross Country Run, that WES competes in every year. |
Brain Breaks
At WES, we are encouraged to give our students a Brain Break 2 times a day. This promotes healthy living for our body and our minds. Our staff has a variety of brain breaks from exercise like Yoga and dance activities to running apps like "Temple Run". This activity is "Sid Shuffle" from the Ice Age Movie and gets the kids moving and clears their minds too.

Food & Nutrition ServicesOur county has worked to provide our county schools with local fruits and vegetables from farms within our county. The apples come from a farm in Smithsburg and are put in cold storage to provide the students with the fruit they need. This way, we are not getting fruit from thousands of miles away. It comes from no more than 20 miles away. This not only helps the schools in Washington County, but also helps the farmers in our area!

Healthy Foods PresentationFor years, second grade has a speaker from the Maryland Extension Office come to the school. She talks to the students about choosing healthy foods and why its important. She also talks about how to eat foods that are normally thought of as the "icky" foods, like spinach, kale, and green beans.

School Garden
The past few years during our STEAM Night, families and faculty work together to plant our school garden. Everyone has a great time weeding and planting seedlings that have been started by the Magnet classes. During the 2018-2019 school year we had some vegetables grow during the summer and were picked by a few teachers.
